Deer Valley Resort has long been regarded as a sanctuary for skiing enthusiasts, characterized by its exclusive atmosphere, steady lift lines, and exceptional service. Nestled in Park City, Utah, this resort has successfully curated an upscale experience, marked by the absence of snowboarders and the presence of knowledgeable “hosts” stationed throughout the mountain. But as the resort gears up for its imminent expansion, it stands to evolve further—transforming both its reputation and its offerings with the addition of a new terrain expanse that promises to change the game for skiers of all skill levels.
The Grand Expansion: East Village
Recently, Deer Valley unveiled its ambitious East Village expansion, which boasts over 3,000 acres, effectively doubling the resort’s skiable terrain and positioning it as the fourth-largest ski area in the United States. Opened to the public on January 1, this new area features two initial lifts and several slopes, with plans for further developments in the forthcoming years. To date, 20 slopes encompassing over 300 acres are accessible, thereby enticing visitors with a broader range of skiing options. The introduction of the Keetley Express bubble lift, complete with heated seats, offers skiers a cozy ascent, ensuring a comfortable experience even in the crisp mountain air.
Looking ahead, Deer Valley is set to unveil nearly 100 new runs by next season, along with additional infrastructure, including a new gondola and five more lifts. Furthermore, Phase 3 of this substantial expansion promises to introduce eight additional lifts and an extra 800 acres of terrain. The carved runs that have already been prepared for future use hint at the increased diversity and challenge that will soon be available, catering not only to the intermediate crowd for which Deer Valley is famed but appealing to expert skiers as well.
Luxury Accommodations: The New Grand Hyatt
As if the ski area expansion wasn’t enough, Deer Valley has also enhanced its hospitality offerings with the opening of the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley. Positioned at the base of East Village, this luxurious hotel features 381 intricately designed rooms and suites alongside 55 condominium-hotel residences. During my visit, I was given a tour of the property, where I discovered delightful dining experiences and entertainment venues such as the stylish Hidden Ace lounge. This unique venue embodies the essence of a vintage nightclub, complete with a performance stage, offering guests not just accommodation but an immersive experience.
In addition to the expected luxury accommodations, the resort provides guests with unique culinary experiences as part of its commitment to excellent service. Dining options such as the Double Blacks coffee shop offer an innovative twist on traditional fare, allowing visitors to watch their selfies transformed into foam art atop their drinks, thanks to an advanced 3D printer. The Lounge at Remington Hall, serving up “internationally inspired and locally sourced” cuisine, is just one of many gastronomic venues that aim to delight the palate.
Even more enticing is the resort’s Taste of Luxury dining series, featuring exclusive meals prepared by esteemed chefs from around the world, including a Michelin-starred experience by Paco Morales. This emphasis on gastronomy elevates the entire vacation experience, merging the thrill of skiing with luxury culinary experiences.
As Deer Valley embarks on this significant growth journey, one of the primary concerns remains whether it can preserve its signature personal touch amidst expansion. Conversations with resort representatives convey that they are intentionally overstaffing this season to adapt to the increased volume expected next year, ensuring that the luxury experience remains at the forefront of operations. The commitment to retain this exclusive high-end appeal echoes the vision laid out by the resort’s founder, Edgar Stern.
Among the standout offerings available at Deer Valley is the “Ski With a Champion” program, which allows guests to ski alongside Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Experiences like these not only create lasting memories but also build a sense of community among sport fans and utilize the celebrity status of athletes to enrich the overall visitor experience.
With its impressive expansion and ongoing dedication to luxury, Deer Valley Resort is poised to not only maintain its status as a premier skiing destination but also enhance its offerings in ways that will attract an even broader audience. The blend of extraordinary terrain and exceptional hospitality creates a compelling narrative for the resort’s bright future, assuring that Deer Valley will remain a quintessential destination for ski enthusiasts and luxury-seekers alike. Whether you’re carving down the freshly cut slopes or enjoying world-class dining, Deer Valley is on track to exceed the expectations of all who visit.
