As the holiday season approaches, AAA has released optimistic projections indicating that more people will embark on journeys than ever before. Over the span of December 21 to January 1, an anticipated 119.3 million individuals will travel at least 50 miles from their homes. This figure represents a noteworthy increase from the previous record set in 2019 by 64,000 travelers. Additionally, compared to last year, which saw a more modest travel turnout, this year’s figures reflect an increase of approximately 3 million holiday travelers, reinforcing the notion that the post-pandemic world is eager to reconnect.
Among the traveling masses, nearly 90%, equating to around 107 million people, are expected to hit the road this season. While this statistic falls just short of the 2019 record of 108 million, it marks a substantial rise of 2.5 million from last year’s numbers. This preference for car travel underscores the American public’s growing desire for flexibility and comfort, allowing families to maintain close contact with one another amidst heightened health and safety concerns. Alongside this increase in road travel, there is a shift toward other modes of transportation, revealing changing consumer behaviors and preferences.
Record-Breaking Air Travel: Cost and Demand
The trend of high travel numbers continues as AAA anticipates a record 7.85 million air travelers this holiday season. This surpasses last year’s record of 7.5 million, a clear indicator of the increasing confidence among passengers to return to air travel. However, this surge in demand comes at a cost. Flights this season are noticeably more expensive; the average domestic airfare has increased to $830 (up 4%) while international tickets have seen a more substantial jump to $1,630 (up 13%). Travelers are now faced with the dual challenge of planning their holidays amidst rising fare prices, creating both excitement and apprehension in the air travel landscape.
In addition to traditional travel methods, a notable rise in alternative travel has been recorded for this season. An anticipated 4.47 million travelers are expected to utilize buses, trains, and cruises, marking a 10% increase from last year. Particularly impressive is the 37% spike in domestic cruise bookings as people seek memorable experiences on the water. This shift highlights a robust interest in diverse travel options, driven by the quest for unique holiday experiences coupled with a yearning for adventure.
As families and friends set their sights on their travel plans, warm-weather destinations dominate both domestic and international preferences. Within the United States, cities like Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami top the list for vacationers, while internationally, places such as Punta Cana and Cancun lead the pack.
