As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, travel forecasts indicate a significant surge in the number of Americans gearing up to hit the road, take to the skies, or set sail. A recent analysis by the American Automobile Association (AAA) suggests that during the extended travel period from November 26 to December 2, approximately 79.9 million people will venture at least 50 miles from their homes. This figure represents an increase of 1.7 million travelers compared to the previous year, a trend attributed in part to AAA’s decision to broaden the Thanksgiving travel timeframe.
Driving continues to be the most popular mode of transportation during Thanksgiving. An anticipated 71.7 million travelers will opt for the convenience of their vehicles, marking a rise of 1.3 million compared to last year. Fortunately for these roadtrippers, gas prices are projected to be more favorable than in previous years, with averages potentially dipping below $3 per gallon this season, a significant reduction from last year’s average of $3.26.
Air Travel Increases Despite Higher Costs
While road travel remains dominant, air travel is also experiencing notable growth. An increase of approximately 110,000 passengers is expected, lifting the total number of flyers to around 5.84 million. However, travelers should prepare for a budget hike, as domestic flight prices have risen by about 3% relative to last Thanksgiving. Despite these increased costs, international flight bookings are up by 23%, with travelers benefiting from a 5% drop in the price of international tickets.
Alternative Modes of Transportation on the Rise
Interestingly, alternative modes of travel, such as bus, cruise, or train, are gaining popularity among holiday travelers. This segment of the travel market has seen a 9% increase from last year, with nearly 1.92 million people expected to travel via these means. One of the notable contributors to this trend has been a significant 20% increase in cruise bookings, signaling a revival in the cruising industry as people seek unique ways to celebrate the season.
Popular Destinations for Thanksgiving Travelers
As families and friends reunite to celebrate Thanksgiving, certain destinations stand out as preferred hotspots. Within the United States, Florida is projected to attract a robust share of travelers, with Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale leading the pack. Additional top contenders include New York and Los Angeles/Anaheim, showcasing the diversity of popular destinations, which also extend to cities like Las Vegas and Atlanta.
In terms of international travel, Budapest, Hungary emerges as the foremost choice for those looking to celebrate Thanksgiving abroad. Other favored international destinations include Mexicali, San Juan, and Cancun, reflecting a blend of cultural and vibrant locales that appeal to various travelers.
Ultimately, Thanksgiving serves as a pivotal time for reconnecting with loved ones, and the surge in travel reflects the importance Americans place on these familial bonds.
