The Specialty Food Association (SFA) has announced a significant shift in its annual programming, marking the end of the Winter Fancy Food Show after nearly 50 years in operation. However, with the advent of a new concept—the Winter FancyFaire—set to begin in January 2026, a new chapter is on the horizon, promising a more interactive and immersive experience for participants. The Summer Fancy Food Show continues undeterred, with its 2025 iteration scheduled for New York City’s Javits Center.

Spearheaded by Bill Lynch, President of the SFA, the Winter FancyFaire seeks to breathe new life into the traditional specialty food showcase. Scheduled to kick off at the San Diego Convention Center from January 11 to 13, 2026, the event will not only introduce new interactive features such as curated food halls and culinary campuses but will also incorporate an “Ask the Experts” station. This innovative setup, akin to Apple’s Genius Bar, aims to facilitate direct interactions between attendees and industry experts covering vital topics like marketing strategies, packaging innovations, and the efficient use of social media.

The decision to return to California, where the density of specialty food buyers is notably higher than Las Vegas, underscores a strategic effort to enhance engagement and attendance. The shifts in venue and format signal an understanding that the food industry is evolving, and the need for new experiences to reflect that evolution is paramount.

As the specialty food sector burgeons, achieving substantial sales figures—boasting $207 billion in sales for 2023—this transformation comes at a time when markets face intense competition. The SFA reports a notable 149% increase in the sector’s growth over the past decade; however, the landscape is plagued with challenges that threaten smaller and emerging brands. Transitioning to a more accessible model through Winter FancyFaire may serve as a vital lifeline for these companies.
